Dear Graham Dugdale,
Thank you very much for your letter last year regarding the
Dugdales. I'm sorry I've taken so long to answer it, but I only
got it yesterday. We moved into a Retirement Village 3 years ago
& although most of our mail was re-directed for 2 years to our new
address by the Post Office, obviously some must have slipped
through the net and your letter, with about ten others have
just been passed on to us. Let us hope that the information
I have will be of some help to us.
Amy Dugdale was my husbands Grandmother. She was born 1872.
She married Edwin Wilkinson in 1893 at Bethesda Baptist Chapel,
Barnoldswick (B'lick) Yks. They had 6 children, & came to Aust.
in 1912.
Her father was James Dugdale b1843 married Roberts Mary
Parkinson b1842 on 3 May 1866 at Bethesda Baptist Chapel, B'lick.
They had 4 daughters. James was the Manager of a Cotton Mill.
James father was Richard Dugdale b1817 married Betty Huthers
b1816. They were married at Bridge St. Baptist Chapel, B'lick
on the 6 Sept 1841. They had 4 children, John died, James b1843,
Johnson b1849, & Alfred died as a child.
Richards father was John Dugdale according to his marriage
certificate, which I have, but I don't know who his mother was,
but at a guess I think it was Ellin Thurnber - there was a
marriage on the IGI at Gisburn Parish Church of John & Ellin
on 7 Jul 1810. & I think they had 10 children. The 1st 2 born
in Gisburn & the last 8 born in B'lick, Richard was the 5th child.
but I'm not certain if I have the right mother. There was another
marriage for a Richard Dugdale married Alice Slater on 26 Jul 1808
at B'lick Parish Church but I can't find them having a son, Richard.
Also a Richard marrying Betty Green on 30 Oct 1826, too late!
So if you can offer any suggestions I would be very grateful.
Now - to help you out with your family:-
In Nov 1999, I hired Film No 0464272, of the 1841 Census of
Arncliffe, Kettlewell, Horton in Ribberdale etc. It also incl-
uded Clapham, Schedule 10, Robert Dugdale 55yrs, Margaret, wife
45yrs, Mary 15, John 13, Margaret 11, Robert 6, & Thomas 2yrs.
Robert was a farmer, that is all the 1841 Census gives.
At the time I was looking for a Miles Bentham. On the 1841
Census this Miles was 60 yrs old, & the only one I could find.
In Dec 1999, I hired Film No 0087462, of the 1851 Census
for the same area. This time Miles Bentham was 74yrs & a
widower, & Miles Bentham 38yrs,Sarah his wife 45yrs, with five
children, one was Alice dau 10yrs, that I was looking for.
Your Robert Dugdale was now 67yrs old, born Tatham,(1783)
farmer of 170 acres, Margaret wife, 59yrs, born Slaidburn,
Mary 25, b Tatham, John 23, b Tatham, Margaret was not there,
Robert 16, b Clapham, Thomas 12, b Clapham. Robert was Chr.
3 Aug 1834, & Thomas Chr. 2 Sep 1838 in Clapham Parish Church.
I think you will have to hire the film for Tatham from your
local Mormon Library to find out more about Robert & his parents.
I hope I have been of some help, or maybe by this time you
have already found this out, I'm sorry I've taken so long
to answer you, blame the Post Office.
I have also had a letter from Melanie Winterbotham, who
is looking for an Alice Dugdale who married John Shuttleworth
in B'lick on 26 Jul 1813. She thinks Alice was born about
1788, I enclose copy of her letter. Is she one of Richard &
Mary's 11 children?
My phone no. is (02) 9708 0680.
Could you ring me one evening? It has been nice to hear from you..
Yours sincerely
