Narrative

Robert grew up on Exeter Farm & helped his father with the Horses. In 1895 he was working in the Wollombi area with Gordon Edgell, assisting the Roads Board Engineer, Mr. Grant. The work involved constructing roads from Hawkesburg River to Cesnock & from Yarramalong to Putty & the Howes Valley. In 1902 he was in charged of constructing the road to Burragorang Valley. He had a lookout over the Burragorang Valley named after him. (see Wendy Phillips story). He built some 50 bridges in the Grafton area; & other places as a monument to his ability, energy & vision. In his Obituary it was claimed that his most notable acheivement was finding a road to Barrington Tops. On a personal note, he appears to have had the best singing voice in the family. His neices & nephews have all said that the best sing-alongs were when Uncle Charlie came.
Robert Charles Braithwaite was Shire Engineer in Kyogle, Tenterfield & Gosford.
