Narrative

SHIPPING RECORDS - Sylvester Thornton arrived on Marques of Huntley on 13 Sep 1826, Captain Ascough, Master. He was 16yrs old, could read & write, Protestant, single, came from Huddersfield, he was a Ropemaker, crime of Arson, was sentenced at Lancaster on 1 Sep 1824 for life, he was 4'8", freckles, brown hair, grey eyes, & had a tatoo on his left arm - RT ET ST & CO !!
Ticket of Leave No 36/1792, dated 3 Nov 1836.
He was allowed to remain in the District of Invermein, dated July 1836.
Sylverster Thornton died at his residence on 14 April 1845 (age 35yrs) reported in SMH on the Mutch Records. On the birth of the 1st 4 children, Sylvester was recorded as being a Carpenter or Carpenter & Joiner, but on the birth of the last 2 children he was recorded as an Inn Keeper.
WDYTYA - Sigret Thornton found that as a convict he had learned to become a carpenter & Joiner, & he had built the Pub called the "Family Hotel" because he thought the road was to go through Muswellbrook, so he borrowed money to build the hotel, & then he became bankrupt .. There were rummers that he shot himself, but it wasn't proved, but he died when he was only 35years old, & left Sarah with 4 chilkdren. Sigred went to visit the grave in Scone Cemetery, where Sylvester & 2 or 3 of his children were buried. (there were 2 babies called Robert) they didn't allow enough time to read the headstone. Sarah his wife married Stephen Saunders just two years after Sylvester died. She didn't have any more children.
