WW1 Army Records, Nominal - L/Cpl Harold Gilkes, Service # 3669, 2nd Battalion. Enlisted 1/11/1915, he was 18yrs old when enlisted, & his mothers address was Mrs. W.M.Gilkes, Jenson's Ave, Watson's Bay, Sydney, he was single & a Cabinet Maker, he had previously served in the Woollahra Division Cadets & as a Trooper in 7th Sydney Lancers. His Unit Embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A35 "Berrima" on 12/12/1915. He was Killed in Action in France on 24/6/1918, at 22yrs of age. He is buried at La Kreule Military Cemetery (Plot 1, Row F, Grave #12) Hazebrouck, France. Wilma found him on the Commonwealth War Graves,
Cemetery records record his Parents as Walter & Winifred Gilkes, "Pelham", Double Bay, Woollahra, Sydney.
Feb 2010 - Wilma rang to say he died when a ammunition dump where he was working exploded, & killed him.
