John was christened in St Michaelis Church Hamburg on 22/6/1834, his Godparents were Johann Diedrich Voet, Catherina Margaretha Nissen. He was working as a Sailmaker when he immigrated on 2 Jan 1854 on "Caesar Godeffroy" to Sydney, then on 10 Aug 1854 on the "City Of Sydney" to Victoria. John arrived in Beechworth in 1859, he was naturalised on 27 Sept 1873. He worked as a miner from 1855 to 1915 in Stanley, & he resided at Three Mile, Stanley from 1873 to 1915. He died in 1915 from senility & cystitis for 2 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church but he was buried in the Church of England Cemetery Beechworth, Section F Grave 122.
