Narrative

John Ashcroft was a convict, Born in Stretford, Lancashire, he was convicted of stealing bolts of cloth from the bleaching grounds in Horwich in Lancaster. He was sentenced to 3 years, from July 1814 to July 1817, he was employed by William Howe at "Glenlee", between Liverpool & Campbelltown NSW.He was assigned 40 acres of land at Minto & settled on the land. He is buried in a Vault at St.Peters CofE Cemetery Campbelltown.
John left England on 22/2/1814 on the "Surrey" arrived on 29/7/1814. She was 720tons - 200 male convicts plus some free settlers, it took 156 days. There was typhus on board & they had 51 deaths. The Captain was James Paterson, 1st & 2nd mates, the boatswain, 6 seaman, the Surgeon & 4 soldiers. The Broxbornebury brought her in from Shoulhaven.
There are 3 deaths for John Ashcroft - 1st in 1835 #2189 Vol 19, which turns out to be for a John Ashcroft of Pitt Street, buried on 29/7/1835, age 54 yrs, ship unknown, occupation butcher, by Rev.Richard Hill, at St James CofE, Sydney. The 2nd one - #2045 Vol 43a age 75yrs. (18 Jan 1855) was ours. The 3rd one in 1886 #13460 son of Thomas & Elizabeth.??

I have a P-copy of John & Elizabeth's Marriage Certificate #1818/2167 Vol 3a. on 20 Apr 1818.
On his marriage Certificate it says John was "Free by Servitude" & Elizabeth was "Free".
