Narrative

Hendrick & Ruth lived at 33 Elswick St, Leichhardt for many years before they moved to Auburn. Ruth died in 1911 at Macquarie Rd Auburn.
When Hendrick and Louisa were married they lived at Gibbons Street and 40 Dartbrook Rd, then at 53 Park Rd Auburn.

"The History of the Auburn Baptist Church 1888 to 2002."
The Rev William Cleugh Black commenced as pastor on the 1st Sunday in January 1924. He came after four years as pastor at North Sydney. The Auburn Church was growing. "At Auburn extensive alterations & additions have been made to meet the growing needs". Rev Black introduced or revived the office of elders. He encouraged community outreach, which included the arrangeing of an annual eisteddford. He continued the policy of establishing daughter churches. Land on the corner of Skarratt & Adderley Sts, North Auburn, was purchased for 150Pounds. Meetings began in 1924. Council approved building plans in 1925, & the building was errected in one day - "a new cause has been started....at North Auburn, .... Auburn has distinguished itself by building a church in a day at Auburn North". Hendrick Bongers was appointed superintendent of the North Auburn congregation. The pastorate of Rev Cleugh Black ended in September 1935. He accepted the position of Home Mission Superintendant of the Baptist Union of NSW. The church membership in 1924 including the branches was 233, it rose to 408 in 1933, when he retired in 1935 it stood at 365. A remembrance service was held in the Auburn church on 6 October 1940 to honour his death on 24 September 1940, at the early age of 57yrs. In 1948, the church members renamed the building Auburn Baptist Church, "The Cleugh Black Memorial Church" in his memory.
The Church Records show the Hendrick Bongers was a Deacon for Auburn Church from 4/8/1911 to 1919, & then from 19/7/1922 to 15/5/1923. He was then an Elder from 1924 to the day he died.He was North Auburn Supervisor from 1925 to 11/8/1931.
After Louisa died he went to live with his daughter Maggie, then Georgie for a while, before he moved to Waterfall Sanitorium where he died.

TROVE - On the 8th April, 1882, at the residence of the Bride's parents, by the Rev. A. Lloyd, Hendrick John , eldest son of Mr. Gysbert Bongers, to Ruth, eldest daughter of Mr. John Gray, both of Parramatta.
